Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Tenmat’s F-Lab? We sat down with Technical Product Manager Chris Thompson (CT), Fire Testing Manager Chris Clarke (CC), and R&D Technician Dean Vincent (DV) to learn more about the Tenmat Group fire testing facility — what it involves, why we have it, and how it supports our products and customers.
What is the F-Lab and what kind of testing happens there?
CC: “The F-Lab is Tenmat’s dedicated fire testing and training facility where we put our products through extreme conditions to see how they really perform.
“From reaction to fire and fire resistance to thermal performance, we simulate real-world scenarios to make sure our materials meet the toughest standards. It’s where science meets safety.”
Why is internal fire testing important for Tenmat?
DV: “Internal testing gives us control and speed. We can validate fire performance, troubleshoot issues, and refine designs without waiting for external labs.
“It’s about staying agile, ensuring compliance, and giving customers confidence that our products will perform when it matters most.”
How does the F-Lab support our customers and the wider industry?
CT: “The F-Lab shows the industry – architects, building control, customers and installers – that we’re serious about R&D and testing. It’s not just a lab, it’s a resource. We run project-specific and system-specific tests that help get Tenmat products specified on major builds in the UK, Europe, and the US. Our furnace can handle multiple international standards, so we’re ready for global challenges.”
What’s the most rewarding part of working in the F-Lab?
CC: “Seeing the direct impact of our work. Every test we run helps shape safer products and builds trust with customers. It’s satisfying to know that what happens behind the scenes here ultimately protects lives and property. That sense of purpose makes the job incredibly rewarding. There’s also a real sense of pride in knowing that what we do behind the scenes plays a vital role in the success of our products.”
What’s one common misconception about fire testing that you often come across in conversations with customers?
CT: “People think fire testing is quick — just install the product and light the furnace. In reality, it’s a detailed process. We replicate real site conditions, which means liaising with multiple stakeholders and partner manufacturers and specifying, sourcing and installing multiple materials before the test build even begins. It’s more time consuming and complex, but that’s what makes the results meaningful.”
Anything exciting coming up in the F-Lab?
DV: “Plenty! We’ve got a packed schedule of internal and external tests, plus new product development projects that aim to set fresh benchmarks for fire safety. It’s a busy time, but every test brings us closer to innovations that make buildings safer worldwide. It’s an exciting and rewarding time for the team.”
