This week we had a chance to sit down with Tenmat’s Head of Finance, Georgina Wilson, to talk about her role, day-to-day duties, and hobbies outside work!

Could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

With 8 older half siblings and 17 nieces and nephews, I come from a very large family and thrive in hectic environments. Although I am originally from Essex and haven’t quite lost the accent, I grew up in a small hotel called the Wheatsheaf Inn in the Yorkshire dales having moved north with my parents at the age of 6. This is still a family business and is now run by two of my sisters – it’s well worth a visit!

I moved to Lancaster to study a degree in Business Studies with the intention of ultimately going into Finance – following my father and one of my sisters who are both also CIMA qualified. I met my now husband while I was at Lancaster and we married in 2019, thankfully before all of the 2020 COVID disruptions. In 2014 I joined Tenmat as a Finance Graduate and after being supported through my CIMA qualification I moved my way up through a number of positions within the Finance team over the eleven years that I have been with the company.

What does your job involve?

As Head of Finance for Tenmat a very broad overview of my job would be the day to day management of the Finance team and the preparation of the management accounts. This involves pulling together the financial information from the previous month and reporting it to other departments withing the business and to the senior management team.

As I was heavily involved in the implementation of the new system in 2020 a lot of my job includes keeping the Finance aspects of the system up to date and answering any queries that come up regarding that.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The people I work with are definitely the most enjoyable part of the job. I am lucky to have a really strong team of individuals who strive for improvement every day while still being able have fun and not take themselves too seriously.

I also find I am still learning new things and building my experience on a daily basis which keeps the work side interesting.

What does a typical day look like for you?

In reality, no two days are ever the same – as a finance team we support the business with the provision of financial analysis to assess past performance with the aim of driving future decision making and improving performance across the business.

The nature of finance is very cyclical so depending on when we are in the year we could be focusing on Audit, budgeting, or year end accounting with month end reporting also being completed each month.

What makes Tenmat a good company to work for?

Again, it’s primarily the people that makes Tenmat such a good company to work for. From the CEO’s office to the shopfloor, people are easy to talk to and work alongside. The canteen also deserves a special mention as Frankie the chef always has restaurant quality food ready to feed the masses.

The challenges that come from a growing organisation are also what makes Tenmat an interesting company to work for and ensure that no two days are ever the same.

And finally, what do you like to get up to away from work?

Outside of work I enjoy nights out with friends, going on long walks with my husband (weather permitting), and spending time with my family, although they are spread across the country. Once a week I also play darts for a Ladies darts team.

I also have a love of foreign travel, particularly Asia. We try to get away once a year to explore new countries and we’re currently planning a trip across Indonesia in September.
