Graduate Development Scientist

 

Job Description

As a Graduate Development Scientist (Passive Fire Protection), you will join our Technical team at the Tenmat Manufacturing & Innovation Centre in Irlam, Greater Manchester, with a focus on materials and products for Fire Protection. You will work with commercial and production stakeholders to develop new technologies, improve existing products and solve materials and process related manufacturing problems. You will contribute to the growing product portfolio and develop as a professional industrial scientist. You will become an expert in passive fire protection materials and products at Tenmat, such as Cavity Barriers and Intumescent Service Penetration Seals used in the Construction industry.

You will work on projects across three broad categories in the Technical department:
• New Product Development – developing new materials and technologies, seeing the product through from initial concept to production.
• Application Engineering – working with existing materials to facilitate their use in challenging new applications.
• Manufacturing Support – providing materials support on projects identified by the Production department to drive cost savings, reduce rejects and improve process efficiencies.

 

Objectives and Responsibilities

As part of Tenmat’s Technical team, you will help to maintain Tenmat’s position as a world-leading manufacturer of advanced materials. Responsibilities include:

  • Development of new materials, technologies and applications through research, lab-scale experiments and production-scale trials.
  • Providing technical support to the Production teams to solve materials and process-related issues.
  • Providing technical support to the Purchasing team to assess the suitability of alternative raw materials.
  • Materials testing and data analysis.
  • Managing communication with production, commercial and management stakeholders during all aspects of projects.
  • Writing technical reports for internal and external use.
  • Supporting the wider organisation through production of other technical literature.
  • Reading and understanding patents for research and assisting in applications for Tenmat patents.
  • Maintaining a tidy presence within shared lab spaces.
  • Conducting supplier and customer visits.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential: Bachelor’s degree.

Relevant Disciplines: Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering. Applicants from all STEM backgrounds encouraged.

Highly desirable: Experience of research and development within industry; Master’s degree.

Useful: Driving licence.
